Dear carolyn,
when I finally gained access to a computer, a modem, an internet server, I was told repeatedly that now I was "connected to the world." funny, sitting here in a quiet dorm room, lacking clarity on all that is both behind and ahead of me, the internet almost seemed to make me feel loneliner.
I do not know how to construct this letter without sounding scary. i'm not. nobody could be more normal--I graduated from college last weekend with a thoroughly useless major, and i'm marking time until law school ("deal breaker," I read in your words; intellectual prostitute as well, I suspect). graduation scattered my friends across the country; it will take more than the miracles of email to keep us dear to each other. I never counted on graduating from college feeling more alone than I did at the beginning.
and so...your journal made me smile. first, the bad days--jesus, at times they were poetic versions of my own thoughts. second, how brave you must be--to put your words in the crossfire of public discourse.
I write only to commend you, to thank you--my night became slightly less lonely upon discovering your site.
sincerely,
elizabeth
