Conclusions: Most people in one manner or another indicated that all three of these bar-like images cause a 3 dimensional effect for them. I would like to claim that they have been educated to see this - primarily through Microsoft's assistance. This test did not discriminate between the two possible causes of this illusory effect: the graphics fool the senses sufficiently to be perceived as 3D; the graphics have been referred to in all literature as the 3D effects in Microsoft's and others software GUI designs. (Right, and there might be other possible sources.)
The issue arose only because, I, being isolated from both of the above causes did not i fact ever perceive or think of any of these images as in any way 3D. Many of the web sites I've designed have not utilized this apparently standard feature of the online world, to the chagrin of our staff. Hence this casual test - to convince me.
I believe though that never-the-less I won the bet as stated:
The browser type and version number were requested only in case we ran into display variances.
